Action Education has stepped up its efforts in the face of persistent crises that are hitting the most vulnerable hardest. Discover the year 2023 through these three categories: access and quality of education, early childhood education, youth and adult education. This selection of photos shows our determination to overcome the obstacles to a world where education is accessible to everyone.

Access and quality of education

The theme of "access and quality of education" highlights the very essence of our commitment: fighting to ensure that every child, whatever their situation, has access to quality education.

For more than 40 years, we have worked tirelessly on the ground to break down the barriers that hinder access to education. Our projects aim to improve school management, teacher training and teaching content, thereby helping to increase school attendance, improve pupil performance and reduce drop-out rates.

We have seen encouraging progress, but we also know that millions of children are still excluded from the education system and that those who do have access often do not receive an adequate education. The figures speak for themselves: 258 million children in the world do not attend school, and 617 million cannot read a simple sentence. These figures are unacceptable, but they also remind us that our mission is far from over.

Early childhood education

With 175 million children aged between 3 and 5 deprived of access to pre-school education worldwide, Action Education stresses that early childhood education and protection are crucial.

The first years of life are a crucial period of development, when quality education promotes health, cognitive and emotional development, and reduces the risk of later school failure. Despite this, early childhood education remains neglected in many countries, with limited budgets and unequal access. Action Education is committed to bridging this gap by setting up programmes to facilitate access to education from the earliest age, in particular by building infrastructure, training staff and raising parents' awareness.

Concrete projects have been carried out in Vietnam and Togo, where nursery schools and community centres have been set up, providing equitable access to pre-school education for thousands of children.

Youth and adult education

There is still a crucial need for access to quality education, as one in five young people in the world is deprived of schooling, while hundreds of millions of adults, mainly women, lack basic reading and writing skills, limiting their opportunities.

In response to these challenges, Action Education has been running a vocational training programme since 2005, offering three-month skills training courses in various fields to young people aged between 18 and 30, with a particular focus on empowering women. At the same time, Action Education focuses on educating young people, helping them to acquire the skills they need to succeed in their personal and professional lives.

Specific projects have been set up in several countries to help women acquire professional skills and boost their self-confidence. One concrete example is in Madagascar, where Action Education is supporting 900 young single mothers over three years, providing them with psychosocial support, raising awareness of gender-based violence and vocational training.
