The provisional death toll from the magnitude 6.8 earthquake that struck Morocco on the evening of 8 September is almost 3,000, with over 5,500 injured, mainly in the provinces of Al-Haouz and Taroudant. Action Education is appealing for donations to provide initial emergency aid to the people affected.

The epicentre of the earthquake was located in the province of Al Haouz in the High Atlas, around 70 km south-west of Marrakech. This area is very close to the Imlil Valley, where Action Education has been running a project from 2009 to 2018 with its Moroccan partner. RIM (Relais Instruction Éducation Maroc association). This valley is now home to around two-thirds of the victims, who live in very isolated villages where access and communications are very difficult.

The Moroccan Ministry of the Interior's death toll continues to rise. For the time being, almost 3,000 deadmore than 5,500 injured and thousands of homeless people. This earthquake, the strongest in Morocco for 60 years, caused considerable material damage. Thousands of homes were destroyed and villages razed to the ground. As with all earthquakes, aftershocks are still likely to occur in the coming weeks, exposing people to further risks. The population, local players and the authorities are mobilising to respond to the emergency.

100,000 children affected

The United Nations estimates that over 100,000 children have been affected by the earthquake. In this type of emergency, children are among the most vulnerable. According to the Ministry of Education, 530 schools have been damaged or destroyed, which has a further impact on children. With the arrival of autumn, temperatures will begin to drop during the night in these mountainous regions, and many inhabitants will find themselves without shelter to protect them from the cold and bad weather.

How can we support this emergency action?

With RIM's local roots and expertise, we are going to provide initial emergency aid in the remote, hard-to-reach villages of the Imlil Valley. The funds raised will be used to provide disaster-stricken families with the essentials they need to survive: water, food, clothing, shelter and blankets, hygiene kits, etc. The aim is to get children back to school as quickly as possible, even in temporary conditions.

Action Education in Morocco: 10 years of development

From 2009 to 2018, Action Education ran the "Education for the development of the Imlil valley" project in partnership with the Moroccan association RIM (Relais Instruction Éducation Maroc).

The overall aim of the project was to offer equal opportunities to all children in the Imlil Valley, which is made up mainly of rural villages in remote mountainous areas with low literacy rates.

Thanks to the project, 24 pre-school centres have been builtallowing 2,700 children children living in rural areas to attend school. In-service training sessions have been provided for teachers, and 24 parents' committees have been set up. In addition, the capacity-building of community players has resulted in numerous initiatives such as the development of tracks, irrigation channels, etc.
