Emergency action project in Niger
Niger is facing a security and climate crisis. In addition, on 26 July 2023, a coup d'état put an end to the regime of the elected president, resulting in a political crisis. The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has imposed sanctions on Niger, which are having a greater impact on the most vulnerable sections of the population. In order to help mitigate the impact of the economic sanctions on vulnerable households in the partner communes (Dakoussa and Tirmini) of the new programme strategy, Aide et Action/Action Education has provided 400 children from vulnerable households with school supply kits.
This emergency action enables children to fully enjoy their right to education in a context of precarious household conditions.
To select the beneficiary children, household vulnerability criteria were defined with the local authorities. These included: female heads of household; people with disabilities; inability to provide three meals a day; lack of a stable income; reliance on foraging for household food needs; lack of a dwelling of their own; socially dependent households.
Based on these criteria, 400 schoolchildren from 129 primary schools in vulnerable households in the communes of Dakoussa and Tirmini were given school kits for the 2023/2024 school year on 26 December 2023. Each kit consists of a school bag and school supplies (pens, exercise books, slates, geometric sets, reading books, etc.).
