Bihar is reeling under the worst ever floods since the past few days. Latest reports indicate that 36 people lost their lives and the Indian Meteorological Department has retained ‘red colour’ warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall in the state in the coming days. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has evacuated 4,000 people since 30th September from flood areas in Patna and as many as 19 teams of NDRF have been deployed in Bihar.
The late upsurge in monsoonal rain has led to incessant rainfall in over a dozen districts of Bihar with three of them – capital Patna, Kaimur and Bhagalpur – being the worst affected. Other badly affected districts are Araria, Banka, Munger, Muzaffarpur and Samastipur.
The worst affected area where Aide et Action is working is in Maner block of Patna (very close to State capital, Patna) where we work with migrant families and children. The Govt. schools are submerged under water, schools are closed and children living in slums/poor pockets are worse hit. In the Maner block, all the villages including 21 AEA intervention villages are waterlogged and it has affected 34,800 people and in Bettiah, a total 637,845 people have been affected. All anganwadi centers, primary schools and middle schools coming under Diara area of Maner and intervention areas in Bettiah are affected by flood. All schools and anganwadi centers have been closed due to waterlogging and prospect of rise in the water level in the coming days as predicted by the Patna district administration. More extensive damage has happened to schools and Aanganwadi which are close to riverine areas.

In occurrence of flood, people are forced to drink contaminated water. Children are not getting supplementary nutrition and mid- day meals. Displaced people are taking shelter in the open areas, government buildings and Schools.
