iLEAD – Youth Clubs & Male Advocate Project

The protection related issues such as Gender Based Violence, Child Abuses, Early Marriages, Alcoholism, Drug Addiction and School drop-outs are rampant among the communities who returned to the country (Sri Lanka) from India after the 30 years’ long civil war that ended in 2009 have been on the rise alarmingly.  AEAI-SL undertook to address the said issues among the above mentioned war affected communities in the Northern and Eastern districts of the country namely Trincomalee and Jaffna districts since January 2017. 

The intervention, working mainly with the youth among the communities, has been able to reduce the cases of Child Abuses, Alcoholism, Early Marriages, School Drop –Outs, Gender Based Violence since September 2016.  The most significant feature of the project is the sustainability aspects in place benefiting the communities.  The project activities are carried out with the full involvement of the District, Divisional and Village level government bodies and Officials such as Village Child Rights Monitoring Committees (VCRMCs), National Youth Council,   Rural Development Societies, Women Rural Development Societies,  Youth Clubs and Sports Clubs, Youth and Sports Officers, Child Rights Promoting Officers, Probation Officers, Grama Niladharis and the Development Officers. And also the village youths called Male Advocates, appointed for each intervention village, have been leading the project activities.
