Press release - International solidarity: Geneva children take up the challenge of a reading marathon to raise awareness of the importance of education worldwide

From 19 February to 25 March 2024, the NGO Action Education Suisse is launching the first edition of its Marathon Lecture in partnership with the Institut Florimont. It's a literary challenge to raise awareness of the importance of education among schoolchildren in the 9th grade. Over the next six weeks, they are invited to read as many books as possible, selected by their teachers, and to take part in the educational project set up by their teachers. Pupils' friends and family will also be involved, as they will be able to sponsor the children's efforts and contribute in a spirit of solidarity to the development of Action Education's educational projects. At the end of the event, each pupil will be awarded a solidarity reader's diploma, to highlight their participation.

During the Marathon, teams from Action Education Switzerland will be visiting classrooms to use a fun approach to raise awareness of the issue of international solidarity in education. It is estimated that 250 million children in the world today have no access to school, 6 million more than two years ago. If nothing is done, they will eventually be added to the 770 million adults affected by illiteracy. These alarming figures testify to an emergency situation in education, and Action Education Switzerland wishes to sound the alarm to institutions and the general public in Switzerland.

About Action Education

Since 1981, Action Education, an international association for development through education, has been ensuring access to quality education for the most vulnerable and marginalised populations, particularly children, girls and women, so that everyone can take control of their own development and contribute to a more peaceful and sustainable world. Because access to quality education helps to combat poverty and disease, limit climate change and build peace in a sustainable world, we promote lifelong learning. We therefore pay particular attention to early childhood education and care, access to and quality of education at primary and secondary levels, as well as vocational training and social inclusion. Through more than 103 projects, the NGO carries out development work and supports numerous local players in 19 countries in Africa, Asia and Europe to promote lifelong education. It particularly targets vulnerable and marginalised populations, especially children, girls and women.
