In his article "In Benin, mothers break the taboo of menstruation at school".Emile Vaizand deals with the taboos surrounding menstruation that keep girls away from school. "One in ten schoolgirls don't go to school during their menstrual cycle, missing out on the chance to learn. almost 20% of school time per year. Emile Vaizand underlines the importance of the mission carried out by Action Education and its local partners in raising awareness and adapting facilities for young girls in 170 schools in the Atlantic and Atacora departments (north-west Benin). Mothers of schoolgirls play a central role in informing girls and keeping them in school. Justin Akpo, head of Action Education's Benin project, explains how menstrual management becomes a strategy for keeping girls in school.
