5 July 2023

For the new Director General of Action Education, "education is a weapon against violations of fundamental rights".

After 25 years' experience in the field of international solidarity and development, notably with the United Nations, Gilles Delecourt has become the new Managing Director of the NGO Action Education. He takes up his post on 3 July, replacing Charles-Emmanuel Ballanger.

new Managing Director of Action Education, Gilles Delecourt.

Millions of people, women and children on the front line, are currently facing multiple and concomitant crises (economic, security, ecological, etc.), which deprive them of their fundamental rights. I joined Action Education because I am convinced that guaranteeing education for all vulnerable populations is an absolute emergency. It is a weapon against violations of fundamental rights. And our programmesMy aim is to enable the most vulnerable to become self-sufficient, to have the tools to defend their rights and to become active players in their own development to build a fairer, more sustainable world. says Gilles Delecourt.

A graduate in tropical agronomy from the University of Gembloux (Belgium), Gilles Delecourt began his career in 1998 as Desk Officer at Caritas France, before joining Aide et Action (formerly Action Education) from 1999 to 2002 as Advocacy Officer in France and then Deputy Country Director in Tanzania.

Gilles Delecourt then worked for Handicap International for fifteen years, where he successively held the positions of Country Director for Angola (2002) and Mozambique (2005), then Regional Director for the Maghreb (2008), Director of Mine Action and Armed Violence Reduction in France (2012) and finally Director of Technical Resources (2015). He then joined the United Nations Mine Action Department until 2022, before applying his know-how and expertise as a consultant on the humanitarian nexus between development and peace in West and Central Africa.
