"Let's put an end to inhumanity at Europe's borders!

31 January 2024

More than 75 NGOs and civil society organisations, including Action Education, have joined forces to launch a campaign entitled "Stop the inhumanity at Europe's Borders! Its aim: to ensure that the fundamental rights of people arriving at Europe's borders are respected.

Borders made impassable by European states

Barbed wire fences and naval blockades; refoulements on land and at sea; corporal punishment by border guards, militias and vigilante groups; detention without trial and confinement in squalid camps; criminalisation of humanitarian workers; deportation agreements to states that have no regard for human rights... These are just some of the methods used by European states to hinder and deter the arrival of refugees, asylum seekers and migrants from other parts of the world. These are just some of the methods used by European states to hinder and deter the arrival of refugees, asylum seekers and migrants from other parts of the world.

The mobilisation of NGOs and civil society organisations: "Let's put an end to inhumanity at Europe's borders!

In response to this unacceptable situation, more than 75 NGOs and civil society organisations, including Action Educationhave joined forces to launch "Stop the inhumanity at Europe's Borders!", a campaign coordinated by the movement United Against Inhumanity (UAI)an independent advocacy organisation set up by a group of experienced humanitarian workers and former UN officials.

The campaign is built around 7 measuresThe implementation of these measures would enable European States and the European Union to ensure that people arriving at Europe's borders are treated in a decent, fair and humane manner, with respect for their fundamental rights. These 7 measures are :

  1. Stopping backflow - European states must immediately stop carrying out refoulements and expulsions on land and at sea and put an end to the practice of detaining people for punitive purposes.
  2. The end of "deterrence by death - All activities aimed at preventing rescue at sea must cease. Mediterranean States must agree to facilitate initiatives aimed at preventing the loss of life at sea.
  3. Human borders - Border control agreements between the European Union and other countries, which allow refugees and other migrants to be treated in a way that violates their rights, must stop.
  4. Justice and compensation - In the event of accidents or the death of one or more migrants, an investigation must be carried out by an independent judicial authority. Justice and compensation must be granted to the victims of such harm.
  5. Safe roads - European states should cooperate with relevant international organisations to enable refugees to reach and settle in Europe by safe and regular means, including state- and community-sponsored resettlement programmes, family reunification and labour mobility initiatives.
  6. No outsourcing - States must not adopt dehumanising legislation that subcontracts or outsources their asylum obligations to non-European states.
  7. Reforming Frontex - The European border agency, Frontex, must be held fully accountable and transparent in its activities and reporting methods.

All these demands will be forwarded to the leaders of all European states, senior EU officials and international organisations such as the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the International Organisation for Migration (IOM). Over the coming weeks and months, the organisations involved in the campaign will be undertaking various advocacy activities at national level, aimed at mobilising the support of parliamentarians, opinion leaders, community and faith-based organisations and the general public.
