Children's rights: far from being a reality for everyone

On this new International Children's Rights Day, the grim reality is that, after more than 34 years of existence, children's rights are still a long way from being applied. Action Education is sounding the alarm and calling on France to make children's rights, and in particular the right to education for all, a priority of its international cooperation policy.

In Cambodia, a library boat on the Tonlé Sap lake

In September 2023, Action Education and its partners inaugurated a mobile library. It welcomes children and adults from communities on the flood plains of the Tonlé Sap lake, in the province of Battambang in Cambodia.

Fundamental rights: young girls under threat

Rape, kidnapping, physical violence, forced marriages... these are just a few examples of the many deprivations and violations of children's rights to which young girls are subjected around the world. And their situation continues to worsen, particularly in crisis situations. On 11 October, International Girls' Rights Day, Action Education is sounding the alarm and reminding us of the urgent need to guarantee access to quality education for all. This year, the association is joining forces with Plan International and has co-signed a petition calling on governments to guarantee access to quality education for all.

Education, an essential weapon in the fight against climate change, is being neglected, according to the NGO Action Education

Natural disasters will claim around 150 million victims a year by 2030, an increase of 50% compared to 2018 (Source UN). The first victims of these crises are children, who are exposed to trauma and violations of their fundamental rights, including access to housing, safety, food and education. The international NGO Action Education is working to help the most vulnerable populations adapt to climate crises and to enable the youngest children to mitigate the effects of climate change, in particular through education for sustainable development.

Cambodgemag boat library Cambodia

Cambodgemag talks about our mobile library boat on Lake Tonle Sap

In Cambodia, to encourage children and parents to place more value on learning and the importance of school, and to improve literacy, Action Education has created 9 mobile libraries - in the form of tuk-tuks - to bring educational books and games to children aged between 3 and 11 living in remote villages. The library on the Tonlé Sap lake - in the form of a boat - has now been added to the project. This library contains hundreds of books, connected televisions, an internet connection, fans and a water filter.

International Literacy Day, on 8 September, is a reminder that 773 million adults in the world (around 14% of the population) cannot read or write. Two-thirds of them are women.
